Moomintroll in oak: Danish Boyhood’s wooden licensed characters
Gadget of the day
Moomintroll has been seen on mugs, as soft toys and on stickers. Denmark’s Boyhood turns him into an oak shelf ornament with movable arms. The same range includes Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty and the Smurfs. There is no technology in these, but the combination of woodwork and licensed characters is odd enough to get a closer look from Hilavitkutin.
Key facts

What does Boyhood sell?
Boyhood’s products are oak home décor objects that resemble toys. The company’s own range began with the balloon dog Ballon d’Og and the paper plane Maverick. Licensed characters came later. The Hello Kitty collaboration with Sanrio was announced in January 2023, and Disney’s Mickey Mouse collection in October 2024. The online store also sells Moomins, Smurfs and Peanuts’ Woodstock.
Moomintroll comes in four sizes. The Mini is a 10 cm pocket version for €70, the Small is 15 cm for €115 and the Large is 24 cm for €280. The XL version is 45 cm tall, only 250 are made according to the manufacturer, and it costs €4,000. At the time of checking it was sold out. Mickey Mouse costs from €130 (15.3 cm) to €365 (24.5 cm), and the smallest wooden Smurf €130.
Where are they made?
The marketing emphasises craftsmanship and Danish design, and that is partly true. According to the manufacturer’s own FAQ page, the products are designed in Denmark, but they are made and hand-assembled in Vietnam. The material is solid oak, and the manufacturer says the wood is FSC-certified. The arms move, so you can give the figure a waving or hugging pose on the shelf.
According to the store’s terms, the return period is 14 days and the warranty two years. Shipping to the EU is free on orders over €150, so a single Large Moomintroll is enough for free delivery to Finland. The Disney and Sanrio collaborations have also been reported by the licensing trade press, and the Moomin collaboration has been confirmed by Moomin Characters on its own Moomin.com website, so these are not unlicensed copies.
Does this belong on a gadget blog?
Honestly, not really. There are no batteries, circuits or apps in these. They are design objects whose only moving part is an arm. We included them because Finnish readers are curious what a Moomintroll costs when carved from oak, and because a €4,000 wooden troll is a gadget category all of its own.
Finnish reality check · comment
The Moomins are familiar to every Finn, but the oak version comes from Denmark. Because the purchase is made within the EU, there are no customs duties, and the prices are already in euros.

Our verdict
The oak Moomintroll is a fun gift for a Moomin fan, especially in the €115 size. The image of Danish craftsmanship should, however, be weighed against production in Vietnam. The €4,000 XL is a collector’s plaything, and to us the funniest gadget here is that price tag.
